Big “D” Marching Band/Jazz Band

Townview Magnet Center has two of the nations’ top schools as ranked by Newsweek Magazine: The Science & Engineering Magnet and the Talented and Gifted Magnet. All six schools housed in Townview Center have been awarded as Blue Ribbon Schools by the US Department of Education. TMP has been working with their Big “D” Band programs, which formed18 years ago, donating $6000 to them in 2009 and another $2500 in 2013. The Big “D” Marching Band won 1st place at the Grambling State University/South Oak Cliff High School Battle of the Bands 12 times in the past 13 years. They’ve performed in a variety of “Bowl” games as well as in the World Strides Heritage Presidential Inaugural Band Festival 2013. It was recognized as the top high school show band in 2011.

They’ve also been chosen to participate in the Annual Children’s Holiday Parade for the past 10 years. A record number of students also selected to the Dallas Independent School District’s (DISD) All-City Band each year. In addition, many of the program’s students qualify for the State Solo and Ensemble Contest every year.

The Big “D” Jazz Ensemble along with the concert band have performed in well-known venues as the new Dallas City Performance Hall, Majestic Theater and Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center. Both bands are under the direction of Mr. Dean Hill (see link) and Ms. Carlisa Washington. The Auxiliary Director is Ms. Evelyn Forte-Jones.
