Meet Texas Music Project’s new youth ambassador, 13-year-old Skyler Derrington.
Her voice and the courage behind it have carried across the country and touched America’s heart.
Skyler, a longtime camper at Camp Mystic in the Texas Hill Country, was among the girls who escaped the catastrophic flood that swept through the Guadalupe River earlier this year. Families are still rebuilding and trying to regain their footing after the devastation.
Texas Music Project’s mission is simple: bring hope, healing, and connection through music, especially in times of crisis. Texans have rallied around the victims, and we are doing our part by helping replace the instruments lost in the flood.
Through our Music Heals / Song of Hope initiative, we are working with Skyler, the Kerrville Independent School District, and families to replace musical instruments that were lost in the flood.
For Skyler, the flood marked a turning point. In the middle of the chaos, she turned to the two things that steadied her: music and faith.
We are proud to welcome her as a Texas Music Project Ambassador, sharing her story and guiding other students as they find their own. She represents the heart of what Texas Music Project stands for.
In the days after the flood, Skyler and her mother wrote a song to understand what happened and honor the grace that carried her through.
That song, “Mystic Hallelujah,” became a testament to courage, faith, and the light that hope can reveal in the darkest moments.
Her message reached far beyond Texas. Skyler performed her song on FOX & Friends, took the stage at the Patriot Awards, and received a surprise visit from artist Lauren Daigle, who praised her strength and authenticity.
At TMP, we help young people turn their experiences into songs that tell their stories of resilience, honesty, and transformation. Skyler shows what can happen when a young voice is given room to rise.
She is now recording her new song “Miracle”, a reflection of her gratitude, her faith, and the strength she found on the other side of hardship.
