Texas Music Project brings hope through music to children of all ages

The Texas Music Project (TMP) is a statewide music charity celebrating its 20-year anniversary. It promotes and supports the rich musical heritage of Texas, showcasing the next generation of Texas music legends. TMP recognizes Texas as a unique hub of musical diversity, producing numerous Hall of Fame and Grammy-winning artists.

In 2003, Texas lagged behind in supporting music education in schools. TMP identified this issue and took action to make a positive change. Over the past two decades, TMP has raised funds, donated instruments, offered instruction, mentorship, interactive seminars, and live performances to disadvantaged and at-risk school-age youth. Research consistently shows the positive impact of music on children’s lives, and TMP believes that education and entertainment go hand in hand.

TMP is grateful for the support it has received from the Texas music community. They express their appreciation, especially to their first Honorary Chairman, legendary musician Willie Nelson, whose blessing was instrumental in their journey.

TMP has created four compilation CDs titled “Don’t Mess with Texas Music” featuring over 80 Texas artists, including Willie Nelson, George Strait, Bonnie Raitt, Eric Clapton, Beyoncé, and more. These CDs have been used to raise funds, and through a partnership with the Texas Commission on the Arts, grants have been provided to schools. These funds have been raised by selling the CDs to companies and organizations like Starbucks, the Texas Film Commission, Texas Tourism, record stores, public and private businesses. TMP’s success led to its recognition in a House Bill signed by Governor Perry and the “Trail Blazer” award from the Texas Commission of the Arts. There’s a rumor that Volume 1 of the CD is the best-selling CD in Texas!

In 2012, TMP initiated a Music Therapy program for children of fallen soldiers and children in hospitals. They partnered with organizations such as American Airlines, Neiman Marcus, YUM Brands, The City of Dallas, and others. This program emphasizes the healing power of music in the lives of children, providing an outlet for expression and communication with their peers both inside and outside hospitals.

TMP invites you to become a Music Ambassador for Music in Texas Schools by supporting our Music Therapy mission.

The Why Behind it All

Music has the ability to transcend borders

Music has the ability to transcend borders, languages, beliefs and bring people together. Creating a more harmonious environment, it serves as a social glue, gutting straight to the heart and creating unspoken bonds. It has the ability to express emotion when nothing else can and heal in the midst of brokenness. Children in particular benefit from music, yet there is a lack of funding in schools and availability for music education and music therapy to children who need it most.
