From Hospital Halls to High School Hearts: How One Student Sparked a Movement Through Music
National Music Therapy Week Spotlight – Thomas Jefferson High School & Common Cents Philanthropy
At Texas Music Project, our mission is often powered by the quiet yet powerful moments that move people to act. During this year’s National Music Therapy Week, we are honored to share one of those stories—one that began in a hospital room and led to a high school choosing to support our mission in a deeply meaningful way.
A student at Thomas Jefferson High School witnessed the power of music therapy firsthand when her cousin was battling leukemia. During hospital visits, she saw the TMP team delivering musical instruments and uplifting care to patients, turning sterile rooms into spaces of creativity, healing, and hope. That moment sparked something in her—a curiosity that led her to learn more about our programs and how we’re using music to heal young lives across Texas.
Inspired by what she saw, this compassionate young woman nominated Texas Music Project as the recipient of funds raised through Common Cents, a student-led philanthropy initiative in partnership with Dallas ISD. With the full support of her school, especially the Thomas Jefferson Color Guard, the students came together to raise $300 to benefit TMP and support music therapy for pediatric patients.
We had the privilege of presenting them with a plaque in appreciation of their generosity and spirit. Even more exciting is what’s to come: we’re planning to follow up with the student who nominated us for a special video interview, capturing her story and the ripple effect that a single act of kindness can have.
This week, and every week, we are reminded that music heals, and that young voices are often the ones that carry the loudest impact. To the students and staff at Thomas Jefferson High School, thank you for believing in the power of music and making a difference.
