From Classroom to Stage: Caleb Hernandez’s Unforgettable Night with Cory Wong

Sometimes music creates moments that stay with you forever.

For 17-year-old Caleb Hernandez, a senior at Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy, that moment happened under the stage lights at House of Blues Dallas.

Through a special collaboration between Texas Music Project, Free Guitars 4 Kids (FG4K), and Grammy-nominated artist Cory Wong, Caleb was selected for a once-in-a-lifetime experience that perfectly embodied the spirit of TMP’s Classroom to Stage initiative.

What began as a community effort to identify a deserving student turned into a night Caleb and his family will never forget.

As part of the experience, Caleb received: A free Fender acoustic guitar, backstage passes to meet Cory Wong, a signed guitar and the opportunity to walk on stage in front of a live audience!

But beyond the gifts and backstage access, it was the emotional connection of the moment that made the experience unforgettable.

Caleb, who plans to become a paramedic and firefighter after graduation, has always carried a deep passion for music alongside his future career goals. He plays bass and electric guitar and is a member of the top jazz band at Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy. He is also involved in multiple bands through Lake Highlands School of Music, dedicating much of his time to developing his musicianship.

Despite his experience performing, nothing could have prepared him for what happened that night.

As Caleb walked onto the stage following Cory Wong’s introduction, the crowd suddenly erupted into chants of his name:

“Caleb! Caleb! Caleb!”

In that moment, a young musician who simply loved playing music was celebrated by an entire room full of people.

The experience deeply impacted not only Caleb, but also his mother and brother, who attended the concert alongside him and witnessed firsthand the power music can have in uplifting and encouraging young people.

“This past tour we were able to give a guitar away to at least one kid in every city we played!!” said Cory Wong.

“I’m so grateful that we get to play music in so many places, and we are inspired after seeing and meeting younger folks who want to share their humanity through playing real instruments.”

The partnership between Texas Music Project and FG4K continues to demonstrate how music education and access can create meaningful opportunities for students across Texas. These moments are about more than instruments or performances, they are about confidence, encouragement, belonging, and reminding young people that their passion matters.

Texas Music Project would like to thank Free Guitars 4 Kids and Cory Wong for helping create such a meaningful experience and for continuing to support the next generation of musicians through music education and community impact.

And to Caleb, this is only the beginning…
